DULANEY’S DANIELLE PARKER TO PLAY FOR DELAWARE

DULANEY’S DANIELLE PARKER TO PLAY FOR DELAWARE

The 6-foot-2 guard-foward is “one of the best in the state,” according to her coach, Richard Welsh.

Dulaney’s Danielle Parker, a 6-foot-2 forward who led the Lions to Baltimore County titles in basketball and volleyball after transferring from St. Frances of Baltimore City, has committed to play basketball at the University of Delaware, her coach, Richard Welsh, told DigitalSports on Tuesday night.

Parker, an excellent student, led the Lions to a 20-0 record last season before losing in the Class 4A state semifinals to visiting Blake High of Olney in Montgomery County.

Welsh calls Parker, a first-team All-Baltimore County selection, the “best player in the county, one of the best in the state
and highly recruited by many major D-I programs.”

Parker and the Lions’ volleyball team play host to Towson on Wednesday afternoon in defense of their county title in the championship game.

YOUTH IS SERVED IN BADMINTON

YOUTH IS SERVED IN BADMINTON

The Towson Generals’ domination of Baltimore County surprised even their coach, Cary Sonneborn, whose team won nine of 11 contests at Parkville.

by Gary Evans

The Towson Generals traveled to Parkville in order to repeat their 2006 county badminton title.

And when the last volley was completed, the visiting birdie bashers had realized their dream.

The Generals won nine of 11 matches to win their second crown in as many season, surprising
even their veteran coach with their effort.

â??From day one of practice, Iâ??ve been reminding the team that our goal was to defend the title. I
wasnâ??t sure if we could do it, but that was our goal for this season,” said coach Cary Sonneborn.

“We have a relatively young team, only one senior starts and we have five sophomores and 10 juniors,” Sonneborn said. “Only six of this yearsâ?? sixteen started on our championship team from last year.”

But the Generals won in dominant fashion, a triumph which could signal a shift in power in the county.

Pikesville had won in 2003, â??04 and â??05, with Dulaney being the team to beat prior to that.

“Their lack of game experience had me concerned throughout the year,” Sonneborn said of his team.
“But time and again, they proved they had the skills to compete with everyone else in the league.â?

The best of eleven games started with three thrilling faceoffs.

In girls’ No. 2 doubles, the Parkville pair of Jasmine Offoha and Sheila Ruiz needed all three matches to defeat Katie Golden and Maddie Sovich, 16-17, 17-15, 15-6.

Meanwhile, the boysâ?? No. 2 doubles also went to three matches, but with Towsonâ??s co-captain, Andrew Reighert, and his partner, Shawn Xiao, defeating Nidhin Babu and Dan Dejong, 15-8, 12-15, 15-13.

The boysâ?? No. 3 singles game between Towsonâ??s Blessan Sebastian and Parkvilleâ??s Joseph Markiewicz was also just as exciting. Sebastian lost 12-15 before regaining his stroke to win out, 17-14, 15-7.

In the No. 3 girls’ contest, Angela Lee of Towson bested Xin Ru Pan 15-1, 15-13.

Dulany Wagner of Towson also won in two over Komal Chaubdhry, 15-11, 15-7.

The girlsâ?? No. 1 doubles tandem, Tori Buck and Holly White of Towson, joined in to win in two, 15-3, 15-1 over Rachel Allen and Laraine Ruiz.

At the halfway point, Towson was up 5-to-1 with five games remaining.

Towsonâ??s Ryan Recchia took two from Sydney Mbachu, 15-8, 15-6, effectively clinching the title for the Generals.

But Towson wasn’t done.

In No. 1 girlsâ?? singles, Towsonâ??s Melinda Chen lost the first set 7-15 but stormed back to win 15-11, 15-12.

Towsonâ??s No. 1 doubles duo of Scott Just and Jimmy Whedbee needed all
three games to defeat Ryan Young and Khoi Nguyen, 9-15, 15-6, 15-12.

Then the No. 1 boysâ?? game, featuring Parkvilleâ??s Andrew Hilseberg and
Towsonâ??s Steven Page, also went to Towson, as Page won 15-7, 15-12.

In the final match of the day, Parkville pulled out a win.

The Knights’ mixed doubles team of Kieu Nguyen and Shawn Brady defeated
Towsonâ??s co-captain Amalie Thavikulwat and partner Shawn Jiang, 15-13,
15-11.

The goal, next season, will once again be the same for Sonnebornâ??s
racqueteers, who should return fifteen of sixteen starters from this
year’s squad.

Co-captains Andrew Reighert (left) and Amalie
Thavikulwat (right) display the Towson badminton team’s championship plaque as coach Cary Sonneborn (center) and the rest of the Generals look on. “Their lack of game experience had me concerned throughout the year,” said Sonneborn, who started just one senior. “But time and again, they proved they had the skills to compete.”

â??’Defend The Title’ will our motto,” said Sonneborn, “as we go for the three-peat next season.â?

GATORS GET AFTER KNIGHTS, 16-0

GATORS GET AFTER KNIGHTS, 16-0

Visiting Perry Hall handed Parkville its first shutout loss of the year, improving its chances at a playoff berth, and lowering the Knights.’

by Lem Satterfield

Second-team All-Metro Dave Stinebaugh had six receptions for 123 yards and a 49-yard scoring pass from Mike Lang, who also rushed for a touchdown as Perry Hall blanked Baltimore County 4A-3A League rival Parkville, 16-0, on the road on Monday afternoon.

Brett Ullman kicked a 22-yard field goal as well as an extra point in the victory.

Perry Hall’s Nelson Knight, who has nine rushing touchdowns on the year, covered 131 yards on the
ground to raise his season rushing total to 958 yards.

The Gators rose to 7-1 overall, and, 6-1 in the league, dropping the Knights to 5-3 overall, 4-3, in
the league.

The loss was the third straight for the Knights, coupled with those against Hereford and Franklin over the previous two weeks.

The Gators entered the game trailing Linganore of Frederick County and North Carroll of Carroll County in the Class 4A North Region in the chase for one of the top seeds for the regional playoffs.

Linganore (8-0) defeated visiting North Carroll, 32-14, on Manday night, meaning the Gators may have gained ground on the losers.

Parkville, meanwhile, dropped from fourth in the region to fifth behind
Thomas Johnson (6-2) of Frederick County, which, on Monday, defeated
Westminster, 32-0.

The Knights, of fourth-year coach John Marquette, have made the
playoffs each of the past three seasons, with their berth in 2004 being
their first postseason appearance in school history.

Defensively for the Gators, David King had two interceptions; Ryan
Pittillo had a fumble recovery; and Cody Creed and Justin Sanders had
sacks against the Knights, who were shut out for the first time this
season.

Parkville running back Ian Sadon was held to less than 40 rushing
yards, according to Perry Hall’s records,  which also credited the
Knights with a total of three first downs.

Creed, Blair Frierson, Justin Sanders and Joe Esbrandt of Perry Hall controlled the line of scrimmage.

The Gators’ offensive line was led by Brian Howell and Joe Lynch, giving Perry Hall six possesions inside 15-yard line.

Stinebaugh’s TD total matched that of last season, raising his two-year totals to 28 for his career.

Perry Hall’s 6-foot-5, 200-pound Dave Stinebaugh , seen (above) making a reception in last week’s 33-0 rout of Kenwood, had six receptions for 123 yards and a 49-yard scoring catch from Mike Lang in Monday afternoon’s 16-0 shutout at Baltimore County 4A-3A League rival Parkville. Stinebaugh has 14 TDs on the year, and 28 over two seasons.

EASTERN TECH GIRLS STORM TO SOCCER CROWN

MAVERICKS PUT BEST FOOT FORWARD

Eastern Tech is dominant in 3-1 victory over Loch Raven to claim Baltimore County girls’ soccer title Monday evening

by Derek Toney

Eastern Tech High School’s Madison Bell was surprised for a moment during Monday night’s Baltimore County girls’ soccer championship game at Loch Raven.

“The one [Loch Raven] girl started crying. There was 15 minutes left in the game, it was like we’ve already won it,” said Bell, a senior back. “I’ve never seen that before.”

It was that kind of night for the Mavericks, who handled the host Raiders, 3-1. In winning for the second time in three meetings this season with Loch Raven, Eastern Tech (11-2-1) captured its fourth crown in the last five seasons.

Leah Taylor, Sarah Holmes and Jamie Richardson each scored for the Mavericks, who had to wait three days because of last week’s heavy rain. Eastern Tech was almost flawless Monday evening in what coach Kim Williams said was their best performance of the fall.

“The past couple of games, we’ve managed to put a whole game together,” said Williams, whose team’s previous game was Oct. 20, a 2-1 loss to John Carroll, the area’s No. 1 squad.. “They’ve been waiting, biting their nails for three, four days to play.”

“I think we’ve worked really hard this season and we’re getting better and better,” said Bell. “We feel our next game will be our best game.”

Taylor, a sophomore forward headed in a corner kick from Rachel Trageser at the five minute, nine second mark of the opening half. Less than three minutes into the second half, Holmes converted a crossing pass from junior forward Amber Womack, giving the Mavericks a 2-0 advantage.

Despite being outplayed, Loch Raven got itself within striking distance as junior midfielder Gabrielle Miller sent a shot from 15 yards out that eluded the outstretched hands of Mavericks’ sophomore goalie Ari Willem at the 22:11 mark. Eastern Tech responded as Richardson, a freshman midfielder finished a cross from Brittany Rhodes in the 13th minute.

“When we all put our hearts into the game, we worked together to get the job done,” said Trageser, a junior midfielder. “With the layoff, it gave us more intensity for this game and pumped everybody up.”

Not that seeing the Raiders give Eastern Tech extra incentive. Loch Raven shared the county crown with the Mavericks a year ago, part of four tight matches during that season. This season, the Raiders played the Mavericks to a 1-1 tie and dropped a 2-1 decision.

Other than Miller’s goal, Eastern Tech controlled the action on a chilly fall night Monday. Loch Raven coach Mike Parker said the Mavericks raised their play in the biggest game of the season.

“I expected us to play better. They had a great game and they were moving well,” said Parker. “Usually, it’s one goal [difference] but today, they came to play. They were more prepared for today than we were.”

Parker is confident the Raiders will be more than ready if they crossed paths again with Eastern Tech, a likely scenario with both teams owning the top two spots in the Class 2A state North Region tournament. Loch Raven, seeded second and defending region champs, will host either Poly or City in a semifinal game Friday while the No. 1 seeded Mavericks host either Lansdowne or Overlea in the other semifinal.

Eastern Tech was denied a shot at the second consecutive state championship by the Raiders a year ago. The Mavericks feel the pieces are in place for a sixth trip to the state Final Four in seven seasons despite Bell being the lone senior.

“I’m going to do everything in my power to make sure we get into the state tournament,” said Bell. “We have a young team, but we’re really strong, and I think we’re going to do great things now and in the future.”

BULLS BASH WARRIORS

BULLS BASH WARRIORS

A week after playing perhaps its worst game of the year, Hereford scored 45 of its points in the first half of a 52-8 rout of Baltimore County 4A-3A League rival Woodlawn during which the Bulls totaled 325 rushing yards.

by Lem Satterfield

Nick DePaola and Josh Asper returned fumbles of 12 and 22 yards, respectively, for touchdowns, as visiting Hereford routed Baltimore County 4A-3A League rival Woodlawn, 52-8, on Monday afternoon.

Asper, Bryan Botti, Jason Fischer, Charlie MacSherry, Sam Newton, Mike Schilling and Trevor Sevier were involved in sacks totaling minus 37 yards.

The Bulls led, 45-0, at halftime, and, 52-0 after three quarters before Warriors got a fourth-quarter 11-yard scoring run from Corey Fuller, followed Michael Reed’s conversion run.

DePaola and Fischer also rushed for scores of 1 and 18 yards respectively; Adam Yates kicked a 30-yard field goal as well as seven extra points; and Peter Green had an intereption as Hereford rose to 8-0 overall, and 7-0 in the league.

The Warriors are 3-5, 2-5.

The win was the 18th straight for the Bulls against county competition,
and it came a little more than a week after having played perhaps their
worst game of the season.

In last week’s 17-14 victory over visiting Milford Mill, Hereford
trailed, 7-0, entering the second quarter and was held far below its
previous scoring average of 45 points.

The Bulls entered last weekend’s game having handed previously unbeaten
Parkville its first loss, 44-23. In addition, the Bulls’ star running
back, Lonnie Liggins, was held out of the endzone against Milford Mill.

Woodlawn was not so fortunate.

Hereford’s Lonnie Liggins (above) rushed for 133 yards and scores of 3 and 15 yards in Monday afternoon’s 52-8 rout at Woodlawn in Baltimore County 4A-3A League action. Hereford is 8-0.

Liggins rushed for scores of 3 and 15 yards against the Warriors, finishing with 133 yards on 10 carries. D.J. Wacker rushed for 86 yards on four carries, with most of that coming on a 58-yard scoring run.

The Bulls totaled 325 yards on 28 carries in the game.
