VIDEO: No. 2 host Perry Meridian captures eight-team Capital City Classic crown

By E.
Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

Defending
state runner-up Perry Meridian got hot in the finals of the Capital City
Classic and emerged victorious from the eight-team, season-opening wrestling
meet Nov. 18. The second-ranked Falcons won seven of the 14 weight classes to
outdistance No. 9 Warren Central, which had four individual champions, 286.5 to
247.5.

Hoosier
Authority was on hand to record the big tournament ââ?¬â?? click here to see the video! (NOTE:

Beech
Grove (161.5 points, one champion) finished third, with Franklin Central
(135.5, one) fourth and Jeffersonville
(120.5, one) fifth.

Six
wrestlers ranked in the top five of their respective classes captured
first-place finishes: Perry Meridians Kyle Adams (#3 at 160 pounds), Craig
Masengale (#5 at 171), and Chico Adams (#3 at 275); Warren Centrals Chris
Conte (#2 at 125 winning at 130) and Josh Norris (#3 at 130 winning at 135);
and Beech Groves Ethan Harris (#3 at 119 winning at 125), who was named the
meets outstanding wrestler.

Perry
Meridians Brian Vest (#11 at 119) also was a winner.

ââ?¬Å?It ran
the way we thought it would ââ?¬â?? Perry Meridian was dominant!ââ?¬Â said Hoosier Authority
webcaster Dave Grenoble. ââ?¬Å?What surprised me was how close Warren Central was. When
they get their (three or four) football players back, they will be a team to be
reckoned with in the Marion County Tournament (Dec. 15-16).

Grenoble & Mark Freeman were on hand all
day long on behalf of Hoosier Authority to bring you the live webcast. If youd

Champion blog: Munster's Eric McGill

As part of our ever-evolving
statewide coverage of all Indiana high school
sports, we at HoosierAuthority.com are proud to bring you the wrestling blog of
2006 125-pound state champion Eric McGill of Munster. Eric finished a fantastic junior
season at 46-1, including a 3-2 victory in the state finals over Portages Adam Walters,
and hes back to take the title at 140 this year, where hes ranked No. 1.

Here is Erics first installment as
we head into the 2006-2007 season

We are
about one month into the season, and everything is going great. We just had our
first tournament last weekend at the Chesterton Super Duals. I went 5-0 at 140
and had four pins. It was a nice way to start the season.

The
tournament gave two Outstanding Wrestler awards, one for 103 through 145 pounds
and one for 152 to 275. I won the award for the lightweights, and my future
teammate at Cornell
University, Travis Dale
from McCutcheon, won the award for the upper weights. Overall it was a good weekend,
and Im looking forward to our next match, a dual meet at Hammond Morton, on
Nov. 22.

It will be
nice to be able to eat on Thanksgiving because we dont have another match
after that until the following Thursday at home against Calumet!

Well, thats
all for now. I will keep everyone updated as much as I can with how everything
is going.

Eric
McGill

Top-ranked 119-pounder Freeman of Bloomington South to wrestle at IU

From HeraldTimesOnline.com

Bloomington South senior
Reece Freeman, who’s ranked No. 1 in the state at 119 pounds in the preseason
poll, has announced that he will wrestle on scholarship for Indiana University
and coach Duane Goldman next year.

Freeman has been to the
state meet all three years for the Panthers. As a freshman, he was 43-4 and
qualified at 103 pounds. As a sophomore, he was 45-4 and placed seventh at 112
pounds. Last year, he was 46-2 and placed fifth at 119.

Freeman will join two
former South teammates at IU, state champions Paul Young and Kurt Kinser, who
are freshmen this year.

ââ?¬Å?IU was the only school I
saw in the Big Ten that combined really good academics and wrestling, said
Freeman, who was recruited by IU assistant coach Mike Mena. ââ?¬Å?Paul and Kurt
always say positive things about IU.

Freeman looked at other
schools such as Virginia Tech, Columbia,
and Cornell.

ââ?¬Å?Then I thought I just
wanted to wrestle for the Big Ten, and what better place than my hometown and
IU? he said.

Freeman isn’t certain what
he will study at IU but feels it will be something involving sports medicine.
