STATE FINALS: Evansville Mater Dei completes perfect season with 11th team title

By E. Shawn Aylsworth

Managing Editor

Coach Mike Goebel’s top-ranked Evansville Mater Dei Wildcats
completed a perfect 24-0 season Feb. 25, barely getting past No. 2
Perry Meridian and No. 4 Mishawaka before throttling fifth-ranked
Bellmont to capture the schools record ninth wrestling title in the
team format and its 11th overall.

ââ?¬Å?This is certainly an enjoyable one,ââ?¬Â Goebel said directly after the meet. ââ?¬Å?It seems like this day has lasted two weeks!

ââ?¬Å?Perry Meridian did a great job, and Mishawaka gave it everything
they had, but I cant say enough about this great group of boys Ive
had. With all the injuries and diversity weve had, to come back and
win was just great.

STATE FINALS: Individual wrestling nets three champs from Mishawaka, two each from Merrillville, Bloomington South

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor
A funny thing happened on the way to the 68th Annual IHSAA Individual Wrestling State Finals Feb. 17-18 at Conseco Fieldhouse ââ?¬â?? all the returning state champions lost!

Well, almost all of them. Bloomington Souths Paul Young wasnt
about to let that happen as he defended his 160-pound championship with
four easy wins, the first two by fall.

But mucho carnage occurred at 119, where a trio of returning state
winners was gone after the semifinals. The survivor was Merrillville
senior Javier Salas, last years sixth-place finisher who ousted last
years champion, Evansville Centrals Anthony Williams, in the semis by
a 4-3 count in overtime. Salas (40-1) then pinned Norwell senior Blake
Harner in 3:18 in the finals.

Nathan Harris of Beech Grove, the 2005 champ at 112, was upset in
the 119 quarterfinals, losing for the first time in 77 matches. And
Hobarts Eric Galka, last years winner at 103, lost in Fridays first
round.

The other returning champ to not repeat was Perry Meridian
140-pound senior Nick Walpole, who dropped a 4-2 overtime decision to
the eventual champion, Hanover Central sophomore Andrew Howe. Howe was
the runner-up a year ago at 130.

Results from the championship matches:

103 ââ?¬â?? Josh Harper (47-0), Mishawaka (9), dec. Chris Lindauer (19-2), Edgewood (11), 6-3
112 ââ?¬â?? Danny Coyne (36-1), Beech Grove (12), dec. Taylor March (41-6), East Noble (9), 3-1
119 ââ?¬â?? Javier Salas (40-1), Merrillville (12), pin Blake Harner (40-2), Norwell (12), 3:18
125 ââ?¬â?? Eric McGill (46-1), Munster (11), dec. Adam Walters (38-5), Portage (12), 3-2
130 ââ?¬â?? Alexander Warren (37-0), Mooresville (12), dec. Dustin Bruce (37-4), Bloomington North (11), 8-5
135 ââ?¬â?? Matt Irwin (45-0), Bellmont (12), dec. Brennan Cosgrove (46-2), Hobart (10), 12-5
140 ââ?¬â?? Andrew Howe (51-0), Hanover Central (10), dec. Cory Fornal (46-2), Rochester (12), 6-2
145 ââ?¬â?? Chad Biddle (41-2), Portage (12), pin Cooper Samuels (45-1), Floyd Central (10), 2:22
152 ââ?¬â?? Kurt Kinser (47-0), Bloomington South (12), dec. Kevin Clem (50-6), Perry Meridian (12), 1-0
160 ââ?¬â?? Paul Young (49-0), Bloomington South (12), dec. Bryan Deutsch (42-2), Columbia City (12), 9-4
171 ââ?¬â?? Ian Hinton (42-0), Mishawaka (11), dec. Phillip Glasser (39-5), Franklin (12), 2-0 (OT)
189 ââ?¬â?? Taylor Vieck (38-0), Vincennes Lincoln (12), dec. Travis Dale (43-1), McCutcheon (11), 3-2
215 ââ?¬â?? Pat Day (46-2), Mishawaka (12), dec. Cody Johnson (44-3), Franklin (12), 12-10
275 ââ?¬â?? Dexter Larimore (41-0), Merrillville (12), dec. Aaron Lindenschmidt (48-1), Evansville Harrison (12), 12-1

Heres a weight-by-weight look at the results:

TO COME

Papiernik named Mental Attitude Award winner
Members of the IHSAA Executive Committee selected Jeffrey
Papiernik of Fort Wayne Snider as the winner of the 2005-06 Ward E.
Brown Mental Attitude Award for wrestling. A four-time IHSAA individual
state qualifier, Papiernik is the first wrestler and 11th
student-athlete overall from his school to earn that distinction.

Papiernik turned in his best individual state finals performance
by placing fourth in the 135-pound weight class last weekend. After
earning team MVP honors in 2004, he was selected as the captain of the
Panthers this season. He compiled a record of 43-4 and ends his career
with an overall record of 154-19.

In addition to being a leader on the mats, he has had major
achievements in the classroom. He ranks first in his class of 455
students with a 4.69 GPA (4.0 scale). He is a member of the National
Honor Society, Indiana Math League, and National Society of High School
Scholars.

Papiernik was also selected to attend the ââ?¬Å?2006 Molecular Medicine
in Action Conference at the IU Medical Center. In addition to these
accomplishments, he was a 2006 Wendys High School Heisman Nominee and
selected as an Indiana University Science, Technology, and Research
Scholar.

ââ?¬Å?Jeff refuses to take short cuts!ââ?¬Â said Snider coach Michael
Ester. ââ?¬Å?He has displayed quiet leadership by example and has excelled
academically, socially, and athletically.

ââ?¬Å?He alone creates the energy and opportunity in order to better
himself as a student, an athlete, and a citizen while taking the time
to share his blessings with those around him.

Papierniks volunteer work includes peer tutoring, middle school
assistant wrestling coach, science fair judge, concessions worker for
high school athletic events, landscaping, and various church events.
The son of Andrew and Janet Papiernik of Fort Wayne plans to attend
Washington University in St. Louis and major in molecular biology.

Preview: Wrestling team state finals

By E. Shawn Aylsworth
Managing Editor

Following
the completion of wrestling team semistates Feb. 8 and the individual state
finals Feb. 17-18, its on to the 11th annual team state
championship! Eight ranked teams will compete head-to-head this Saturday, Feb.
25, at Center Grove.

The quarters
As the
entire free world knows, the big match of the day will occur right off the bat
as top-ranked and undefeated Evansville
Mater Dei faces No. 2 undefeated Perry Meridian in the quarterfinals.

History
is definitely on the side of the No. 1 Wildcats, whose eight state team titles
preceded Lawrence
Norths run of two straight the past two seasons. And Mater Dei boasts six
wrestlers ranked in the Top 20 at seasons end.

But the
Falcons ââ?¬â?? runners-up in 2002 and 2004 ââ?¬â?? have some serious depth (nine ranked
wrestlers), and a glance at the probable head-to-head matchups would seem to
give Perry the advantage in eight of the 14 weight classes. Can Mater Dei
overcome that shortcoming by piling up enough points via pins, technical falls,
and major decisions? It says here that it will not.

The
winner of that clash of the titans gets either No. 10 Indianapolis Cathedral (three
ranked competitors) or No. 4 Mishawaka (five ranked). The two met Dec. 10, when
the Cavemen posted a 29-24 win over Cathedral. Add in that the Irish have lost
six dual meets this year compared with Mishawakas
zero, and you are looking at a probable Perry-Mishawaka semifinal.

On the
other side of the draw, No. 3 Merrillville
takes on No. 5 Bellmont. Each team has one loss, but Bellmont wrestled a tougher schedule and owns
the advantage in ranked wrestlers, 5-3. Despite the fact that Merrillville had two individual champions
last Saturday at Conseco Fieldhouse, its the Pirates first-ever trip to the
team finals, whereas the three-time state champion Braves are making their 10th
appearance. Bellmont gets the nod here.

The
fourth quarterfinal features No. 9 Columbia City against 15th-ranked
Bloomington
South. The formers record (20-2 is much more impressive than the latters
(24-7), but the Eagles had only three wrestlers ranked compared with six for
South. On paper this thing looks dead even, but Bloomington South has gotten hot at the right
time, and the Panthers figure to feed off their pair of undefeated state champs
(Kurt Kinser at 152, Paul Young at 160) from a week ago. Advantage B-town.

The semis
If Perry
Meridian can get past the juggernaut that is
Mater Dei, then theres no reason to think the Falcons will falter against Mishawaka although four
of the Cavemens ranked wrestlers are either No. 1, No. 2, or No. 3. Provided
thereââ?¬â?¢s no significant letdown, Perry prevails ââ?¬â?? but it may reeeeeeeeaaaaaal
close.

Bellmont or Bloomington,
Bloomington or Bellmont another likely toss-up for the Panthers. Yet
they come into this thang ranked 15th, so whats to lose? This
match, probably due to a weakness at the four heaviest classes. The four
Panthers at 171, 189, 215, and heavyweight all have losing records, whereas
Bellmonts biggins go 17-8, 29-7, 28-8, and 30-9. That monstrous advantage may
translate into several pins, which will more than likely make the difference
here.

The finals
If Perry
Meridian can survive No. 1 and outlast No. 4, then bring on No. 5, right? Right.
Despite their being exhausted emotionally and physically, theres no way coach
Jim Tonte allows his troops to not put the wraps on a perfect season. The
score, again, may be superclose, but who really cares with a first-ever state
championship in your claws?

Perry
Meridian gets it done.

No. 10
Indianapolis Cathedral drills No. 11 Carmel, 41-9

Indianapolis Cathedral dominated by winning 11 matches, including seven
straight at the lightest weight classes. The Irish advance to a state quarterfinals
showdown Feb. 25 with No. 4 Mishawaka.

The 135-pound match featured fifth-ranked Dedrick Harrison of Cathedral
against Carmels
No. 16 Tom Griffin. Both wrestlers entered with only two losses each, but it
was Harrison who got the first and only takedown
of the match, and that was all he needed in a 3-1 victory.

At 140, the only fall of the night took place when Cathedrals No. 18-ranked
freshman Gavin McGinley pinned Casey Kelly in overtime.

And at 160, the matchs other ranked wrestler, Cathedrals No. 13 Johnny
Schmaltz, scored a 9-1 major decision over Carmels Mike Klemen.

The most exciting match of the night, however, came at 119, where Cathedrals
Calvin Sullivan battled Will Mascaro of Carmel.
And we mean BATTLED.

Mascaro had a commanding 9-3 lead at the end of the first period, but
Sullivan scored back points and nearly ended the match with a fall in the
second. But time ran out on Sullivan, and the middle period ended with him
trailing, 10-8. The score went back and forth in the third before Sullivan finally
pulled off the stunning comeback and won, 17-16.

Then again, it was just that kind of night for Cathedral.

Thanks to Rick Hayes for this
report.

11 of the next 12. The two losses Perry suffered were both by two points, so
dominant was the win.

Bloomington South pulls upset of No. 6 Franklin in come-from-behind thriller,
35-33

Details are sketchy, but we do know that top-ranked Paul Young of Bloomington

No. 4 Michael Reese at 160. The only points Young ââ?¬â?? referred to affectionately
on the wrestling coaches website as ââ?¬Å?a beastââ?¬Â ââ?¬â?? has allowed all season long are
escape points.

The match
started at heavyweight, and South was able to steal the team victory with wins
in the last three weight classes: a fall at 103 and decisions at 112 and 119,
the latter IN OVERTIME.

Holy

REGIONALS: Host Bloomington South advances seven individuals to semistate

By Adam Julian
Contributing Writer

BLOOMINGTON ââ?¬â?? Bloomington
South lived up to its reputation as a regional power Feb. 4 by sending seven
wrestlers on to the individual semistate at Evansville. The 15th-ranked host Panthers
were particularly successful in the lower and middle weight classes with
first-place finishes at 119, 152, and 160 as well as top-three finishes at 103,
119, 130, and 135.

Three
Bloomington South wrestlers added victories to their unbeaten records. Junior
Reece Freemans victory at 119 pushed his record to 39-0 on the season, further
cementing his No. 4 ranking after defeating previously unbeaten Brandon Brawner
of Southwestern (Shelbyville).

At 152, top-ranked Kurt Kinser also pushed his
unbeaten streak to 39 with a finals victory over cross-town rival Bloomington
Norths 10th-ranked Seth Teeter.

And the No. 1 wrestler in the
160-pound weight class, senior Paul Young, proved the legitimacy of his ranking
by pinning Seymours
Patrick Smith early in the second period to push his record to 41-0.

Elsewhere,
Edgewood junior Chris Lindauer defeated
Bloomington Souths Daniel Young, 10-6, to win at 103. At 112, Brown County
freshman Mitchell Richey took care of Southwesterns 10th-ranked
Michael Bartlett. Columbus Norths Ethan Ott jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the
first period and never looked back at 125 as he took care of Northviews Chris
Craft, 11-4.

Bloomington
Norths Dustin Bruce pinned Bloomington South senior Nick Samaro with 20
seconds remaining in the second period to capture the title at 130. Columbus
Easts Kyle Copper improved his season record to 43-2 at 135 with a 4-3 victory
over Tony Withrow of Bloomington South. At 140, it was Columbus East again as junior
Spencer Hamm defeated Sullivans Justin Cox, 4-3.

In the
higher weight classes, Madison senior Jordan
Fish defeated Jennings
Countys Jorge Lockard,
10-4, at 171. At 189, Seymours
fourth-ranked Derek Mullins defeated Scottsburgs Bill Simpson, 5-4. Jennings Countys James Edwards pinned Terre
Haute Souths Cale Madsen late in the second period of their 215-pound match.

And
Brown Countys Wes Ault came out on top
against Terre Haute Souths 12th-ranked heavyweight Richie Hammond.

The top
three finishers in each class advance to the semistate, to be held Feb. 11 at
Roberts Stadium in Evansville.
For Bloomington North coach Perry Summit, the week is a chance for his team to
ââ?¬Å?continue to work on our conditioning, drill, and back off the hard wrestling
for a little bit and try and remain injury free for the semistate.
