Team regionals pose first big tests for state powers

By Mike
McGraw

Executive Director

Wrestling
team regionals are this week, and the fireworks are bound to start early among
the states elite squads. Several of the Feb. 1 single-elimination regionals include
multiple ranked teams, and at least a couple feature absolute clashes of the
titans.

Lets
start up in ââ?¬Å?The Region,ââ?¬Â where the Highland Regional should consist of a final
between 13th-ranked Hobart and No. 3 Merrillville. Down the road at
Portage, the host Indians, currently eighth in the polls, are looking toward a
regional final match with No. 7 Crown Point. Staying up north, No. 4 Mishawaka
is headed toward a showdown with 19th-ranked Penn in the South Bend
Clay final. The Cavemen would appear to have the upper hand, there but dont
discount the rivalry factor when those two get together.

In the
central part of the state, No. 14 North Central (Indianapolis) and 10th-ranked Indianapolis
Cathedral should square off in the finals at North Central. Those two are
familiar with each other as they come out of the same sectional. Second-ranked
Perry Meridian begins a grueling road to the title when they face 16th-ranked
New Palestine in the opening round at Beech Grove, then get reacquainted with No.
12 Warren Central in the final ââ?¬â?? assuming that Warren gets past Ben
Davis in the opening round.

Moving
east, No. 20 East Central and perennial power New Castle
are headed on a collision course for the finals at Union County.

In Southern
Indiana, 15th-ranked Bloomington South
faces Jennings
County in the first round at Seymour. Top-ranked
Evansville Mater Dei finds itself hosting a regional with three ranked
squads ââ?¬â?? the Wildcats open with a test against No. 20 Princeton
and then likely face city foe and 17th-ranked Reitz in the
championship round.

If you are
looking for the easiest road being traveled by a legitimate state contender
then look toward Adams County, where No. 5 Bellmont is the only ranked team
in the Bellmont Semistate bracket. Speaking of semistates,
the ââ?¬Å?Regionââ?¬Â powers will collide in that round at Valparaiso,
and the winner of the bloodbath at Beech Grove will win a trip to New Castle to more than
likely face the aforementioned New Castle-East Central winner.
