W: #6 Crown Point thumps #16 Chesterton, 48-13

Sixth-ranked Crown Point was down two starters, but the sixth-ranked Bulldogs still managed to capture 11 of 14 weight classes Nov. 28 in a 48-13 dual-meet romp over No. 16 host Chesterton. Click here for the nwi.com story on Crown Point’s win.

The Bulldogs’ victory marked the third time during this young season that ranked teams have gone head-to-head on the mat. Then-No. 11 Lawrence North squeaked past 10th-ranked Warren Central, 31-30, on Nov. 20, the same that fifth-ranked host Bellmont rolled over No. 13 Columbia City, 43-12.

WRESTLING PREVIEW: TONY MACK’S ACTIONS WILL SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS

By Lem Satterfield

During a recent Owings Mills wrestling practice, 26th-year coach Guy Pritzker said he was “getting on” 160-pound Tony Mack about being more of a vocal leader.

“I was telling him, ‘Tony, you’ve got to get on these kids, make them a
little tougher.’ And Tony says to me, ‘Coach, I don’t like to yell at
kids,'” Pritzker said of Mack, who returns as the coach’s 25th
individual wrestling champion.

“I said, ‘Tony, I’m not telling you to yell at them, I’m telling you to
take them aside and talk to them,’ and I’m telling him that a lot of
these kids look up to him,” Pritzker said. “As big, and as powerful as
Tony is, and as strong as he is and the fact that he’s a real good
wrestler, it’s going to take only a few words from him to motivate his
teammates more than I could. He needs to be the captain, and I need to
be the coach.”

Mack definitely is at the head of the pack when it comes to his weight class, where he’s the likely favorite to earn yet another Class 2A-1A state championship.

Mack won last year’s Class 2A-1A state title with a 9-2 victory over Rising Sun’s Aaron Williams, improving to 37-1, on the year, and 99-6 for his career.

A one-time Baltimore County champion who has twice been county runner-up, Mack has won two straight Class 2A-1A North Region titles after being third as a freshman, and earned his first state title after having been third and second during the two previous seasons.

Mack’s lone loss last year came during a nip and tuck, 145-pound county title-bout, where he was beaten, 5-4, by Dulaney’s Matt Jacobs, who went on to win the 145-pound state title on the Class 4A-3A side.

With Hereford’s returning three-time state champion, Josh Asper (171), Mack is the only other returning state titlist to the county, which has crowned 120 individual state champs.

This year, however, Mack is being called upon to be more of a leader, all the while, maintaining a focus on being undefeated over an entire season for the first time in his career.

A Nov. 28 scrimmage against defending Howard County champion Glenelg, which, like the Eagles, appears to be a state title contender, should go a long way toward setting the tone for Mack.

Mack could match up with state runners-up Chris Stinnett or Danny Bichner of Glenelg, who are up from the 125, and, 130-pound weight classes, respectively.

Pritzker believes Mack compares favorably to one of his former, three-time state champs, Grant Johnson, who placed third at states as a freshman.

Johnson went on to earn All-American honors at Boston College, and now works as a police officer in Boston.

“Tony’s just so strong. For somebody to beat him, they have to be a
grizzy bear,” Pritzker said. “He’ll probably go at 160 all year. He’s certified for 145, but I’m not going to
have him lose weight. He can maybe go at 152. There’s always somebody that can
beat you, but I’ve never seen a kid with this kind of power. That’s why he reminds me of Grant Johnson.”

Mack said he spent much of the offseason wrestling the club circuit, with the likes of Class 4A-3A state champ Maurice Fleming of Northeast in Anne Arundel County, two-time Class 4A-3A state champ Greg Saumenig of Old Mill, Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association and private schools champ Mitch Fenton of Archbishop Curley and Class 4A-3A state runner-up Tanner Schaffer of LaPlata in Charles County.

“There were a lot of good wrestlers. I rolled with Maurice a little bit. I got to see some of the mistakes I was making, and I was working on getting better all the time,” Mack said.”There are a lot of things I learned about myself, and a couple of moves that I learned from them that will help me coming into this season.”

Mack could pick up career win No. 100 in the Eagles very first match on Dec. 6. against Franklin.

“I lost one time last year, which didn’t really affect me other than to motivate me,” Mack said. “I was trying to go undefeated, and I went in like I was going to win. I’m sure going to try and go undefeated this year.”

Mack will tackle winning his second consecutive crowns at the Perry Hall, Parkville and Franklin Invitationals as well as the county, region and state tournaments.

But if his goal is to lead the Eagles to their fourth Class 2A-1A state duals title, as well as their eighth state tournament title, he’s not necessarily talking about it.

“I’m a team captain, but I’m not one of those real vocal team captains,” Mack said. “I guess I’m more of a guy who is like, ‘well, the guys will see what I do, and then, mabye they’ll follow by example. I’ll try to make a few people better. We’re trying to get the team  together.”

MALE ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: ‘MAMA TIME’ PUSHES DUO TO REGIONAL TITLE

DigitalSports
Male Athletes of the Week

Travis Crane and Thomas Edwards,
Eastern Tech, football

The senior duo combined to account for all four of Eastern Tech’s scores in a 27-0 victory over defending Class 2A state champion Edmondson that earned the Class 2A North Regional Championship last Friday.

Crane, the starting quarterback, threw two touchdown passes — a six yarder to Rob Kyle and a 41-yarder to Edwards.  Crane also ran for a 19-yard touchdown to cap the scoring on the night.  Edwards, along with the touchdown reception from Crane, scored on a 13-yard scamper in the fourth quarter.

A week earlier, in the Regional semifinal game, Crane and Edwards again connected on a seven-yard touchdown pass that brought the Mavericks (12-0) from behind and gave them a 13-12 lead over Poly in an eventual 20-12 victory.

The two have been close friends for a number of years and have been teammates just as long, even having played played recreational league football and lacrosse together.

Last month, Edwards’ mother passed away, and the two players have dedicated their season to her with a phrase called “Mama Time.”  The two draw strength from “Mama Time” and their intensity and passion trickles down to the rest of their teammates.

“Every play, every down, we’re out there playing for her,” said Edwards, who kneels down in the endzone in prayer following each of his touchdowns.

On the back of both players’ helmets, in masking tape, the phrase “Mama Time” is written to remind them of who they are playing for.

Both players have had exceptional seasons for the Mavericks.

Edwards has rushed for 358 yards on 39 carries and scored nine total touchdowns — seven rushing and two receiving.

Eastern Tech, as a team, has rushed for 3,065 total yards, with eight players logging a total of 100 or more yards.

In the playoffs, Edwards has accounted for three touchdowns — one rushing and two receiving.

Crane went 39-for-78 passing for 533 yards and has thrown 12 touchdowns to no interceptions on the year. On the ground, the QB amassed 374 yards on 56 carries for eight touchdowns.  Defensively, Crane also has 29 tackles and two interceptions.

If you are looking for the dynamic duo, you can catch them, along with the rest of their teammates, on Friday nights after games celebrating at Buffalo Wild Wings in White Marsh.

Eastern Tech has tied a school record for most wins in a season with 12.  This Friday, the Mavericks will play host Clarksburg (12-0) in that State semifinal game.

Eastern Tech last reached the 2A State semifinals in 2003 and finished as runners-up.  The Mavericks will be attempting to earn only their second-ever state title berth, having finished as Class 3A state runner-up in 1998.

With Crane, Edwards, and “Mama Time” on their side, the Mavericks are a formidable opponent.

TRAVIS CRANE ACCOUNTS FOR THREE TDS AS MAVS BLANK 2A STATE CHAMPS, 27-0

by Joe DiBlasi

Senior quarterback Travis Crane (click to see Eastern-Edmondson video) ran for a 19-yard touchdown and threw for scores of 6 and 41 yards to Rob Kyle and Thomas Edwards, who also ran for a 13-yard score as Eastern Tech dethroned Class 2A North Region champion Edmondson of Baltimore City, 27-0, on Friday night at CCBC-Essex to advance to next Friday night’s Class 2A state semifinals.

The Mavericks (12-0) also had four interceptions against Red Storm (9-3) quarterback Carroll Washington, who entered the game with 10 passing touchdowns (10 over two seasons) and seven rushing TDs (13 over two years).

The Red Storm, last year’s Class 2A state champs, drove right down the field on their game-opening drive only to be stopped at the Mavericks’ 1-yard line.

Later, the Mavericks’ Andre Hall caught one of his two interceptions in the endzone, and Aaron Wilson also had an interception. Hall now ranks second on the team with four interceptions behind Joe Jones, who has six.

Ryan Schlothauer registered his eighth and ninth sacks of the year, and Wilson also had a sack.

Darryck Davis had an interception, Bryan Watson disrupted three passes, Schlothauer and Emmanuel Gbor disrupted one pass each, and Devin Hardy recovered a fumble.

“Carroll Washington is an awesome player, and we were able to contain
him,” saisd Crane, who has passed for 533 yards and 12 touchdowns, and rushed for 374 yards and eight more scores. “All eleven guys played well. Our goal is to win two more and
capture a state championship.”

The Mavericks, next week, play host to the Clarksburg Coyotes (12-0), a second-year program out of Montgomery County that went 3-6 last year in its first season of football.

The Coyotes, 33-7 winners over Middletowne (7-5) in the Friday night’s Class 2A West Region final, are the owners of a 21-6  win  over Lansdowne on Nov. 2 that came a week after the Mavericks had routed Lansdowne, 58-8.

“It was a great game. They’re a terrific team. I give lots of credit to their coaching staff. They had their guys ready to play, ands we’re very happy with what we accomplished,” said coach Mark Mesaros, whose Mavericks tied the school’s single-season record for victories.

“We didn’t do all of the things that are characteristic of our team, but we did step up in the second half when we had to,” said Mesaros, whose Mavericks shut out the defending Class 2A state champs. “We did a good job on containing their running game, and we got great field position that set up our scores.”

The Mavericks went 12-1 as Class 3A state runners-up in 1998, and, were Class 2A state semifinalists in 2003.

After a scoreless first period on a cold and bitter night, Crane hit Kyle, a junior wide receiver, with 3:35 left in the second quarter. Dave Spalt’s first of three extra point kicks made it 7-0.

The drive covered 49 yards, with more than half of that coming on a 24-yard run by Darian Conners.

“We’re usually a running team, but my line gave me lots of time tonight and the receivers got open,” Crane said. “Our defense played well, and we just seemed to put it all together.”

With 4:15 left in the third quarter, Edwards’ 13-yard run made it 13-0.

After stalling another Edmonson drive at the 10 yard line, the Mustangs drove 90 yards, ending with the 41 yard pass from Crane to Edwards at the 8:19 mark in the fourth quarter.

And with under two minutes to go, Crane and the Mavericks were simply trying to run out the clock when Crane broke free around the left side and dashed 19 yards for the final margin, 27-0.

“We fought hard, and I’m a little sore, but we were able to shut out a great football team. With four picks tonight, we now have 26 on the year,” said Edwards, part of a balanced running attack who has, for the season, seven touchdowns on 358 rushing yards and two receiving scores.

Davis has rushed for 718 yards and eight TDs, and Connors, 631 rushing yards and 11 TDs with one scoring reception.

“Our defensive backs dropped back, doing their job. And the line kept pressure on Carroll,” Edwards said. “We’ll soak this in, but get right back to work tomorrow, because it’s a new experience to get this far.”
