FOOTBALL PREVIEW: SMALLER WOLVERINES THINK BIG

Western Tech’s drop into the Class 1A
could help if the Wolverines can endure “a daunting [Baltimore County
2A-1A] schedule,” said coach Al Lagon.

Western Tech Wolverines

Coach:
Al Lagon, fifth year (20-21 career)

Last year’s record: 2-8 overall, 1-7 Baltimore County 2A-1A

Offense: Multiple option

Defense:
Multiple

Returning starters:
Offensive 5, Defensive 6

Top players: Kenneth Bartee, Sr., DB-RB, 5-7, 150; Christian Chase, Sr., LB-OL, 5-11, 212; Rashad Cromer, Sr., SS-FB, 5-9, 170; Patrick Gilreath, Sr., DE-TE, 6-5, 218; Bryan Greene, Sr., DB-WR, 6-1, 153; Norman Lee, Jr., LB-OL, 5-9, 185; Chris Mason-Hale, Jr., DE-WR, 6-2, 180; Barry Muller, Jr., DB-RB, 5-9, 172; Angelo Saxon, Sr., LB-OL, 5-5, 186; Lance Wilkes, Jr., DB-QB, 5-9, 165.

Outlook: The Wolverines’ drop into the Class 1A could help its playoff chances if it can win games against its difficult county 2A-1A League.

“Many of our kids will be going both ways during our daunting schedule,”  against the likes of Eastern Tech, Randallstown, Overlea, Sparrows Point,  and New Town,” Lagon said.

“Being the second smallest school in the county to play football has its challenges,” Lagon said. “If the seniors rise to the occaison and provide the
necessary leadership, then 2007 will be a successful season.”

Chase
is a three-year starter, and Cromer ran for over 500 yards last season.
Saxon started every game. Gilreath is an athletic player “an
outstanding shot putter and a three-sport athlete,” Lagon said. “With
tremendous potential.”

from last year and the addition of the JV players who moved up,” Railey
said. “We have a good group of football players.”

The Raiders also “have been fortunate to pick up some newcomers,” said Railey, “who we feel will really help fill out our team.”

The Raiders will have to deal with a tough county 2A-1A contingent that includes Eastern Tech, Randallstown and Overlea.

FOOTBALL PREVIEW: WOODLAWN WANTS REDEMPTION

“Injuries plagued last year’s team. We lost several games last year by
fewer than three points,” said Woodlawn coach Leonard Hart. “We’re looking to a brighter
season this year with a good returning senior class.”

Woodlawn Warriors

Coach: Leonard Hart, seventh year (37-27 career)

Last year’s record: 2-8 overall, 2-7 Baltimore County 2A-1A

Offense:  Pro-I

Defense: 3-5

Returning starters: offensive 4, defensive 3

Top Players: Corey
Fuller, Sr., QB-WR, 6-4, 180; Mike Baptist, Sr., WR, 6-2, 190; Josef
Harrison, Sr., C-N, 5-11, 235; Anton Blackwell, Sr., FB-LB, 5-11, 190;
Jamal Lebrew, Sr., WR-S, 5-11; Mike Reed, Sr., RB-CB, 5-11, 190; Tyrone
Garnett, Sr., OLB, 6-0, 195.

Outlook: Despite coming off
of a disappointing season, Fuller “is a stand out player who has great
potential,” said Hart. Fuller “recently ran a 4.6 40-yard time,” he
said, adding, that the player’s primary position is QB, “but he is an
explosive receiver with great hands.”

Fuller shared time at QB
last year, and is “also a track star,” Hart said. Fuller won a region
title in the triple jump. “Vanderbilt, Villanova, Kansas State and West
Virginia are recruiting Corey,” said Hart.

A three-year
starter, Harrison “has matured into an excellent offensive lineman,”
Hart said. “He plays center primarily, but can be moved any where on
the offensive or defensive line.”

A member of the wrestling team, Harrison also throws the shot put in track.

“Injuries
plagued last year’s team. We lost several games last year by fewer than
three points,” Hart said. “We’re looking to a brighter season this year
with a good returning senior class, and a good infusion of young
players.”

Cadet & Junior Nationals: Bloomington's Arthur nets national freestyle title; Indiana brings home 14 All-Americans total

By Joe Caprino
Contributing Writer

FARGO, N.D. ââ?¬â?? What more can a young man ask
for than to stand atop the podium as a national champion? Over 100 Indiana wrestlers set
out with that exact goal July 21-26 in the Asics/Vaughn Cadet & Junior Nationals.

Only one,
though, ended up on top after the dust settled as Joe Arthur, an incoming
junior for Bloomington
North High
School
, came away with the national championship
in Cadet freestyle wrestling in the heavyweight division.

He
overcame an early loss to win his pool based on a pin over one of the other top
three guys in his weight class. After getting second life at a championship
shot, he took advantage of wrestling on the raised mat in Fargo
by sweeping Montanas
Toby Erikson by 1-0 and 3-0 scores for the championship.

Another Hoosier
heavyweight, Jonathon Clark of Jeffersonville
High School
, took home a
fourth-place finish. Clark downed New
Jersey
s Daniel Walker 3-1 before dropping 4-2 and 7-0
decisions.

Also earning
All-American honors for Indiana with top-eight finishes were Cody Phillips of
Union County High School (seventh at 84 pounds), Ryan Stahl of Elkhart Memorial
High School (sixth at 119), and Chaz Brock of Crawfordsville High School (fifth
at 215).

In the
Greco-Roman portion of the Cadet competition, Indiana had five wrestlers claim
All-American honors. Luke Schofield of Southport
High School took home sixth place at
105, Mark Myers of Crown Point
got seventh at 160, and Damon Jones of Lawrence Central finished fourth at 171.

Brock and Clark, meanwhile, both came home as double All-Americans
as they captured fifth and seventh places, respectively, in Greco-Roman action.

The Juniors
team didnt have much success in the Greco-Roman portion (zero top-eight
finishes), but Indiana
did come away with four All-Americans in the freestyle portion. Led by two-time
state champ Andrew Howe of Hanover
Central High
School
, who finished third at 152 pounds in one
of the toughest weight classes in the tournament, the Hoosier juniors had a
great tournament.

Also
placing among the top eight were state champions Camden Eppert of Anderson
Highland High School and Eric Galka of Hobart High School,
who took fifth and eight at 105 and 130, respectively. Lawrence Norths
Jeremiah Edwards, meanwhile, brought home a seventh-place finish at 125.

Overall,
it was a great tournament for the Indiana
guys as many made it deep into the brackets. There were more than 4,000 entries
in the five-day tournament that many consider the toughest wrestling tournament
in the nation.

Heres
saying ââ?¬Å?great jobââ?¬Â to all the young men, and especially the ones that brought
home some hardware!
