Zionsville: Carmel wins with Westfield moving on in second
Posted on 28 January 2007 by alexanderscot.
ZIONSVILLE ââ?¬â?? Never underestimate the power of senior wrestlers.
Six Zionsville wrestlers (four of them 12th-graders) will move on to the
individual regionals next Saturday. They did this after placing in the
top four of their respective weight divisions at the Zionsville
sectional Saturday.
The
In the team standings, Zionsville finished third out of 12 teams with 217 team points, while
sent one more person to regionals and finished one place higher in the
team standings than it did last year. It may have been a little
suprising to someone uninitiated to

Ethan Mann and Eli Smith, for example, wrestled varsity matches as
freshmen. Both finished third in decisions: Mann defeated Zionsville
senior Tyler Kreipke 5-3 to claim bronze at 140 pounds, while Smith

Another
Tigers senior, Ory Rachell, scored third place at 160 pounds by pinning
Eagles senior Rob Kern in 2 minutes, 43 seconds. It was a reversal of
fortune, as Kern had beaten Rachell with a 6-4 decision in the
championship bracket. Meanwhile, sophomore Adam Skelton grabbed a
third-place finish at 130 pounds with a 3-1 decision victory over
Junior
Ryland Leavitt finished fourth at 135 pounds after dropping a 5-2

ââ?¬Å?Quite
a day,ââ?¬Â said Tigers coach Bob Willhite. ââ?¬Å?The fact that we finished in
the top four without a champion or runner-up, I dont know what to say.
The kids came out and wrestled really well. They really stepped up as a
team.ââ?¬Â
Zionsvilles two sectional champions from last year repeated as winners this year, and were joined by a new champion.
The
Eagles new champion was sophomore Ryan Mantel, who blitzed his way
through the 103-pound draw in his first-ever sectional tournament. He

ââ?¬Å?I was happy with how I wrestled today,ââ?¬Â Mantel said. ââ?¬Å?I stayed strong throughout all the matches.ââ?¬Â
Mantel
followed in the footsteps of his older brother, junior Tyler Mantel,
who won at 103 pounds last year. This year, Tyler Mantel wrestled at
119 pounds, and won the championship there.
Tyler Mantel began
with a 17-2 technical fall over sophomore Jason Musselman, then scored
an 11-3 major decision win over junior Ryan Mullin. In the
championship, Mantel held off a furious comeback by
ââ?¬Å?It
went exactly the way I wanted it to, and exactly the way I thought it
was going to,ââ?¬Â Tyler Mantel said. ââ?¬Å?It was right to the script that I
kind of had in my mind.ââ?¬Â
Finally, senior Graham Youngs won at
135 pounds. He pinned Hamilton Southeastern freshman Patrick Robinson
in 3:18, then won over Fishers sophomore Brad Farrell in a 17-6 major
decision. Youngs then won the championship with a tough 3-1 decision

pretty sweet, said Youngs. I kind of had a rough conference meet, and
it just kind of feels good to get back on the roll.ââ?¬Â

ââ?¬Å?Weââ?¬â?¢re
pretty excited,ââ?¬Â said Zionsville coach Bob Brennan. ââ?¬Å?We did all right.
We were happy with our champs. We were a little disappointed in ââ?¬Ë?45 and

which was probably the hardest weight class here, and stepped and did a
nice job. Iââ?¬â?¢m really happy overall.ââ?¬Â

East Chicago Central: Freshmen lead the way for champ Lake Central
Posted on 28 January 2007 by alexanderscot.
EAST CHICAGO
Five underclassmen were able to capture sectional championships, and team champion
had two of the more impressive youngsters with freshmen Bryan Smith
(103 pounds) and Marc Escobedo (112) both winning championships.
The two each had three wins and each had a forfeit, pin, and major decision to account for them.
“I
feel good about winning the sectional considering I had to go out there
and wrestle hard to win,” Smith said, “As a freshman I felt more
pressure coming into this because I wanted to build a reputation.”
The young guns weren’t just found on
Among the seniors capturing titles, Milan Milutinovic (160) of Whiting and the state’s top-ranked wrestler at 140 pounds,
McGill had three wins with one pin and two forfeits to capture his fourth sectional championship to the surprise of no one.
“I’m
happy with the win but this is just the start of a four-week process,”
McGill said. “I’m as ready as I’ve been all year and I’m wrestling good
at the right time so I’m looking forward to the regional.”
It
was also a banner day for Milutinovic, who won his second sectional
championship and notched his 100th career victory as well.
“I
believe I’m the first person in school history to reach 100 wins so I’m
very proud of this accomplishment,” Milutinovic said, “My first match
was a little rough but I was able to wrestle tough and win my second
sectional, which is a pretty good feeling.”
Other
notable individual champions were Craig Fruth (152) and Robert
Nolbertowicz (171) of Clark, and Joe Brown (215) of Whiting.
for the team title. The Indians had six individual winners — Smith,
Escobedo, David Diaz (119), Joe Damron (145), Kyle Malec (189) and Mark
Chraca (heavyweight).
“I
really liked our chances coming in and I thought we wrestled really
well and were able to work hard and be aggressive all day.” L.C. coach
Jim Rhodes said. “This is my first sectional championship as a head
coach so I’m real excited and very proud of my team.”

Mishawaka: Host Cavemen win in disappointing fashion
Posted on 28 January 2007 by alexanderscot.
MISHAWAKA
The No. 2-ranked Cavemen took charge from the start, dominated the field, and rolled to an easy victory.
There was one difference, though. This time, they didn’t feel very good about it.
“I want to win
state. But the way we’re wrestling right now, that’s not going to
happen,” said coach Darrick Snyder, who didn’t see a lot of reason to
celebrate despite his team’s 56 1/2-point margin of victory in the
tournament at Mishawaka’s gym.
“We need to get a whole lot
better,” he said. “Overall, we did OK, but there are some kids who
didn’t meet expectations. Our expectations are pretty high, and they
have to be high if we want to win state.”
Seven
wrestlers won individual championships and 13 qualified for next
weekend’s individual regional at Clay. The Cavemen scored 313 1/2
points.
But the Cavemen also lost a No. 1-seeded wrestler,
171-pounder Brandon Straub, who finished sixth. Additionally, another
No. 1-seeded Caveman, 145-pounder Brandon Mersich, finished third.
Add to that some sloppy performances and the simple truth is the Cavemen have had better days.
“I
don’t know, sometimes it’s hard for guys to get as focused as they
should when it’s pretty certain we’re going to win,” said team captain
Ian Hinton, who kept his undefeated season going with an easy victory
in the 189-pound weight class.
“I’m pretty satisfied to see us
win,” said Hinton. “We’ll pick it up in the (practice) room this week
and the next time you see us, I think we’ll be a lot sharper.”
The top four finishers in each weight class advance to individual regional meets.
The undefeated Cavemen also advance to Wednesday’s team regional, also at Clay, along with
The Kingsmen held off Riley, 257-229 1/2, for sectional runnerup honors.
“We
did pretty much what I thought we would,” said Penn coach Henry Wilk.
“I knew we would have to wrestle well to beat Riley. There were a
couple places where we might have done better, but for the most part, I
thought we did as well as you could expect.”
Penn also sends 13
wrestlers to the individual regional. Two Kingsmen are going as
sectional champs and five others as runners-up.
Riley had two champs and advanced 11 to the regional. Clay had one champ and qualified eight.
“I’m hoping this is a stepping stone to the state meet,” says Clay’s Ryan Salata, who defeated
Paul Beck, 5-0, in the 103-pound title match. “From here on out, I know
I need to be more aggressive. It goes a lot easier if you score the
first takedown.”
The closest match of the day may have been the 215-pound final between Riley’s George Malone and Penn’s Jeremiah Maggart.
Malone
improved his season record to 36-0 with a 4-3 victory. He had to ride
out Maggart in a wild third period that almost saw the Penn senior
score a reversal, twice.
“In the wrestling room this week, I’m
going to work on taking people down, letting them up, and taking them
down again,” said Malone. “All these close matches are ******* me. I’ve
got to start getting some separation in the scoring.”
Speaking of takedowns,
“He was making a statement,” noted Snyder.
Afterwards, Penn coach Wilk noted that Petko suffered a partially collapsed lung earlier in the week.
Other
Mishawaka champs included Josh Harper at 112, Nick Wiesjahn at 119,
Steven Sandefer at 135, Kurt Cauffman at 160, and Randy Morin at
heavyweight.
Penn’s Travis Swihart took the 130 title and Matt Medow downed LaVille’s Ted Casper, 12-5, for the 145-pound crown.
The most surprised champ of the day?
“Not
surprised, ecstatic,” said Worsham. “Winning this was my goal but there
were times this season when I was wondering if it would happen. You
just can’t ever give up.”

Plymouth: Culver Academies comes up just short as host Plymouth wins

drain of taking the mat three times. David Read dealt with it all and

Those teams both advance to Wednesday’s team regional at South Bend Clay.
Read,
who suffered injuries on the mat a week earlier, was called on to make
a stand against 18th-ranked Andy Keener in the 152-pound class.
After
both were denied in early scoring attempts, the fifth-ranked Read
worked an opening to shoot in on Keener for a 2-point takedown and an
overtime win.
“He is a strong wrestler,” said Read. “I wrestled him four times two years ago. We probably meet next week.”
The
Pilgrims placed eight wrestlers in the championship round with a
33-point advantage over the Eagles, who landed five championship spots.
The benefit of the three extra wrestlers provided
“CMA is tough, we knew they have some horses,”
coach Bob Read said. “They were going to win some matches. We are not a
great team. We have a great group of kids. Our kids wrestle as a group.”

The Eagle crew did win matches, working its way to 191 points heading into the finals.
Culver
Military talent showed when it picked up four titles in five
championship chances. Winning were Garrett James (145), who improved to
40-0, Branden James (160), Devin Vass (103) and Daniel Young (125).
Garrett

his final match by an inadvertent blow to the head. The dazed grappler

“Things are going well right now,” said James. “You have to wrestle every match like it’s the state finals.”
“We

pleased CMA Coach Russ Schenk. “Garrett is wrestling great and working
hard. He is peaking right now.”
Also demonstrating fine
individual performances was the cast from Wawasee. The Warriors have
been hampered by the lack of numbers throughout the season. Coach Scott
Dehart has been without a full roster all year.
Dropping to as
few as three wrestlers because of injuries, ineligibilities and lack of
interest, Wawasee has taken its share of lumps.
The Warriors suited up seven wrestlers for the team competition, but five qualified for the regional.
Advancing to the individual regional at Clay by finishing in the top four slots were 11 wrestlers from
“We are going into the meat grinder,” said coach Read. “We will just work hard. We have wrestled those kinds of teams before.”
