Third-ranked Perry Meridian flexed some serious muscle Dec. 27-28 at the North Montgomery Invitational, posting a 7-0 dual record that included lopsided wins over four ranked opponents.

Among the Falcons’ victims were sixth-ranked New Palestine (44-18), No. 20 Bloomington South (55-12), and Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference rivals No. 14 Warren Central (58-6) and No. 15 Carmel (53-6). Perry Meridian also handily defeated Portage 51-9, North Montgomery 56-9, and Delphi 70-3.

Can you say WOW?

Coach Jim Tonte’s troops finished with five 7-0 wrestlers. No. 2-ranked senior Jimmy Schoettle recorded six pins and a technical fall at 112 pounds, junior Chris Goodwin had three pins and a major decision at 125, No. 11 senior John Leonard recorded four pins at 140, and 145-pound junior Blake Wood had two pins among the lower weights. Finally, defending state champion and top-ranked senior Chico Adams had four pins at heavyweight.

New Palestine, meanwhile, had four wrestlers go unbeaten: No. 3 Kyle Ulrey (three pins, two tech falls at 152), No. 9 Max Begovich (five pins, one tech fall at 171), No. 15 Luke McCamey (two pins, two major decisions at 189), and 13th-ranked heavyweight Joe Napariu, who competed both there (3-0 with a pin) and at 215 (4-0 with two pins and a major decision).

Bloomington South 103-pounder Shawn Miracle (three pins, one forfeit), Carmel’s 130-pound Will Mascaro (five pins, one major decision), Portage 135-pounder Sean McMurray (two pins, one forfeit, one major decision), and Delphi’s 160-pound Braden Atwood (four pins) made it through unscathed at 7-0 as well.

Mascaro was named the tournament’s most valuable wrestler.

There were eight matches that pitted ranked wrestlers against each other, but only three of them went according to form. And there were two instances where ranked wrestlers fell to unranked opponents.

The rundown:

At 112, Schoettle pinned No. 13 Robert Floyd of Delphi.

At 119, No. 11 Brannigan Barlow of Bloomington South upset No. 5 Jacob Tonte of Perry Meridian by fall but lost 6-4 to No. 8 Don Alderman of Delphi. Alderman, meanwhile, forfeited against Tonte.

At 130, Carmel’s unranked Mascaro upset No. 3 Brian Vest of Perry Meridian 11-4, while No. 6 Michael Torres of Portage did not wrestle.

At 135, No. 7 McMurray of Portage upset No. 5 Jacob Tasseff of Perry Meridian 6-5.

At 140, Leonard upset No. 3 Chris Mascaro of Carmel 8-5.

At 152, Ulrey stopped No. 13 Chris Stepp of Perry Meridian 6-4.

At 171, Begovich pinned No. 10 Shane Evans of Delphi.

At 215, No. 12 Chris Schaeffer of Perry Meridian was upset 8-3 by unranked Billy Pearman of Portage.
