W: #2 Mishawaka dominant in capturing 16-team Traicoff Invitational

GARY – Second-ranked Mishawaka made a major statement Dec. 8 at the Chris Traicoff Memorial Wrestling Invitational held at Calumet. The Cavemen posted a perfect 5-0 record, including three lopsided victories over Top 10-ranked opponents, in capturing the team title.

After advancing to the top tier following easy wins over Lake Station (75-6) and Valparaiso (68-7), coach Darrick Snyder’s Cavemen proceeded to lay waste to No. 9 Lawrence North (47-11), fifth-ranked Crown Point (43-12), and No. 4 Indianapolis Cathedral (47-10).

Combined with a similar dominating performance on the same day by third-ranked Perry Meridian at its own Quin Duals meet in Indianapolis and two unexpectedly close dual-meet victories this week by defending state champion Evansville Mater Dei, you might expect a new No. 1 team in the next set of state rankings. (Click here for the latest individual rankings.)

Despite its 37-point loss in the day’s biggest match, Indianapolis Cathedral submitted the day’s second-best team performance.

The Fighting Irish advanced to the top tier by downing host Calumet 65-9 and Floyd Central 45-21. From there, Cathedral eked out a 33-25 victory over Crown Point and also beat Lawrence North 43-30 in addition to the Mishawaka defeat.

Crown Point put a 41-18 hurting on Lawrence North to finish third in the four-team top tier. The Bulldogs won their first two matches with 57-12 and 39-16 counts over Munster and Franklin, while Lawrence North had opened with 43-18 and 38-22 victories over Anderson Highland and Portage.

The meet’s other ranked team, No. 12 Franklin, finished sixth overall. The Grizzly Cubs opened with a 51-12 defeat of Lowell before falling to Crown Point. Although Franklin beat Valparaiso (50-24) and Portage (39-23), an upset 30-27 loss to Floyd Central resulted in the Highlanders capturing fifth place.
