Staff Report

BEECH GROVE — Fourth-ranked Perry Meridian captured five of the 14 individual titles Nov. 19 en route to the team victory at the eight-team Capital City Classic held at Beech Grove.

The Falcons also boasted five runner-up finishes in totaling 273.5 points to outdistance No. 8 Warren Central (214.5), which managed a pair of individual titles and three second-place finishes. The host Hornets (three champions, one runner-up) were third with 161 points, while Columbus North (one champ) took fourth with 154.4.

Among the notable championship results, Beech Groves 13th-ranked Danny Coyne pummeled Perry Meridians John Urich, the preseason No. 2 at 103 pounds, with a 10-1 major decision in a showdown of Indianapolis Southside seniors.

At 119, defending 112 state champion and 112 No. 1-ranked junior Ethan Harris of Beech Grove pinned Perry Meridians Brian Vest in 1:21.

At 140, top-ranked and defending state champion senior Nick Walpole of Perry Meridian had no troubles in dispensing of Franklin Centrals Brandon McAllen, the preseason No. 16 at 135, pining the junior in 2:14.

In the next final at 145, fellow Falcon senior Eric Aue defended his No. 5 ranking well with a pin in 3:42 of Warren Centrals Carl Griffin.

The victories by Walpole and Aue began a run of four titles in five weight classes that helped seal the deal for Perry Meridian and coach Jim Tonte.
