Indiana Gold takes seventh, Indiana Blue finishes hot at Brute Scholastic Showcase

After
winning its pool with a 35-27 victory over Florida
early April 14, fifth-seeded Indiana Gold dropped a heartbreaking 27-25
quarterfinal decision to Virginia Blue at the 2007 Brute Scholastic
Showcase in Delaware.
 
That
preceded a 44-14 loss to Illinois
in the consolation round, and it wasn�t until its final match that the top
Hoosier contingent was able to recover. Its 42-15 beatdown of Delaware Gold
clinched seventh place overall in the 24-team field and allowed Indiana Gold to
finish 6-2.
 
Brennen
Cosgrove (145 pounds) and heavyweight Chico Adams went undefeated in eight
matches for Indiana Gold, while teammate George Malone was 7-1 at 220 and Ryan
Konrath 6-1 at 176.
 
Indiana
Blue, meanwhile, got hot on Saturday, winning all three of its matches decisively
to finish the tournament at 5-3. Blue thumped Virginia Orange 42-19 and New
Jersey Blue 56-21 before wrapping up its weekend with a 37-24 win over
Massachusetts Gold.

Indiana Gold vying for Pool D title at Brute Scholastic Showcase

Brute Scholastic Showcase held April 13-14 in Delaware. Combined with results culled from

here is Mr. Miller�s report from Day 1:
 
Indiana�s
two teams earned decent seeds in the 24-team, dual-only tournament as Indiana
Gold entered at No. 5 and Indiana Blue came in 15th. Indiana Gold, the Hoosier
state�s premier team featuring four former state champions, lived up to its No.
5 seed and more by rolling to a 4-0 record. Indiana Blue, meanwhile, found some
trouble in posting a 2-3 record in Friday the 13th competition.
 
Indiana
Blue got things started slowly for the Indiana
contingent in Round 1, where the 15th seed was beaten by New York 35-18.
 
But
both teams came out roaring in Round 2, with Blue evening its record at 1-1
with a 62-9 romp over Massachusetts 62-9 while
Indiana Gold opened up by pummeling New England
by the same 62-9 score.
 
In
Round 3, Indiana Gold rolled past Ohio Thunder 52-9.
 
In
Round 4, Indiana Gold downed Western Maryland
52-15 while Indiana Blue fell 34-28 to Virginia Blue.
 
In
Round 5, Indiana Blue was defeated by New Jersey Red 52-16.
 
In
Round 6, Indiana Gold thumped New Jersey Blue 51-14 while Indiana Blue beat
Ohio Lightning 40-25.
 
The
Day 1 results mean that Indiana Gold will be vying for the Pool D championship
Saturday morning against fellow 4-0 squad Florida at 8 a.m. ET. From there, Indiana
Gold will face either Virginia Blue (4-1) in the quarterfinals with a victory
or New Jersey Red (5-0) in the consolations with a loss.
 
As
for Indiana Blue, it faces Virginia Orange in a 10 a.m. match, with two more
matches to follow regardless of outcome.

Brute Scholastic Showcase April 13-14 in Delaware

Two Indiana teams will compete April 13-14 in the 2007 Brute
Scholastic Showcase, a dual-only tournament presented by the National Wrestling
Coaches Association and hosted by Delaware
State University
in Dover.
 
A pair
of two-time state champions ââ?¬â?? Mishawakaââ?¬â?¢s Josh Harper and Hobartââ?¬â?¢s Eric Galka ââ?¬â??
as well as two more one-time winners (South Bend Riley�s George Malone and
Chico Adams of Perry Meridian) pace the Indiana Gold team that�s coached by
Bill Flatt of South Bend Riley and Jim Schoettle of Perry Meridian.
 
The
Indiana Blue team, meanwhile, features three wrestlers that placed fourth at
this yearââ?¬â?¢s state finals ââ?¬â?? Michael Harmon of Southwestern (Hanover),
Yorktown�s Kyle Mosier, and Mishawaka�s Randy Morin
ââ?¬â?? as well as Homesteadââ?¬â?¢s
Justin Wight, who suffered only one loss this year. The Blue team is coached by
Westfield�s Terry O�Neill and Danny Struck of Jeffersonville.
 
Teams from 13 states ââ?¬â?? Indiana
(2), Colorado, Delaware
(2), Florida, Illinois,
Maryland, Michigan,
New Jersey (2), New York
(2), Ohio, Oregon,
Pennsylvania (2), and Virginia
(2) ââ?¬â?? as well as another from the New England
region will compete for the team title.
 
A year ago, Pennsylvania
Blue downed New Jersey Blue, 23-22, for the team championship. Indiana Gold
finished sixth after losing its final match to Illinois, 49-13.
